As St Louis's first original Zydeco band, Paul (PJ) Jarvis and the Zydeco Crawdaddys treat you to a wide variety of traditional as well as contemporary Zydeco music from the French Creole region of southern Louisiana. Founded by Paul (PJ) Jarvis in 1996, the Daddys will take you back to the bayous of Lake Charles and Lafayette, where the infectious rhythms of traditional zydeco instruments make all its listeners smile, no matter what age, race or gender. Audience participation with rub boards and shaker cans is always permitted, if not actively encouraged. And during the show, the Daddys heat things up with their own renditions of traditional New Orleans style jazz numbers, interspersed with many original compositions. Some of their more popular tunes like 'Boll Weevil' and 'Washboard Susie' are a sure bet to get the crowd rolling, especially the pretty girls.
WHAT IS ZYDECO?
The Zydeco Crawdaddys play the French Creole music of Southern Louisiana using traditional Zydeco instruments such as the accordian and washboard. Much of the Crawdaddy’s music originates from those musicians who names are household items in Lafayette, Lake Charles, and New Orleans, Louisiana. The Crawdaddys play both the old style and the more contemporary style of Zydeco, evoking endless fun and dancing for fans of this unique genre of southern music.
CAN I BUY A RECORDING?
The Zydeco Crawdaddys released their first CD in 1999, recorded live at The Tap Room in St. Louis, Mo. A second CD, 'St. Louis Mardi Gras', has recently been released, comprised mostly of original tunes by PJ Jarvis, capturing the band's trademark 'St. Louis Zydeco Sound'. CD's can be purchased wherever the Crawdaddys are appearing.
WHAT’S NEW?
In the spring of 2000, the Crawdaddys added a New Orleans brass band sound to their show, featuring the heavy brass sound of Dixieland music. This makes the Daddys an especially valuable commodity during Mardi Gras season.
